Prints available at society6. Entitled “Philographics”, these minimalist geometric shapes represent various philosophical doctrines like existentialism, empiricism, nihilism, and solipsism. Several more can be seen on Carreras’ website, but spoiler alert: there appears to be no mention of Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, which is just as much a code of ethics as it is a religious experience.

Those keys are symbolic and open no door in Lyon. Instead, they embody the three divisions of the town (North, West, South) that existed during the 1st Empire. Each key is decorated by elements specific to each part.
They were created by Joseph Chinaed for the visit of the Emperor Napoléon I and his wife Joséphine in Lyon on the 10th of April 1805, and then publically presented to him in front of the political men of the city as a sign of allegiance and gratitude.

Kara Walker provocatively engages American slavery in nearly life-size silhouettes that hijack racial stereotypes and exaggerated physiognomies drawn from blackface entertainment. Amid nightmarish revivals of the antebellum South, hyperactive shadow forms expose and reverse a fundamental operation of minstrelsy: the projection of white audiences’ illicit desires and irrational fears onto black bodies. Pushing derogatory caricatures to absurd limits, Walker overturns the diffusion of violence through comedy. Jokes are rerouted, punch lines go astray, and heroes and villains switch places. Walker herself inhabits these scenes as the Negress. Mischievously subverting any “straight” story, these theaters of horror thrive on the proximity between attraction and revulsion, drawing together love and hate, violence and tenderness, for a more complex approach to an unsettled historical problem.

Brooks painted a windswept female figure as a crusader and the personification of France. She based the woman’s strong features on those of the actress Ida Rubinstein, with whom she was in love at the time. The figure’s chiseled features and stern gaze set against the backdrop of a burning city evoke a sense of defiance and strength. The city represents Ypres in western Belgium, the site of a major battle during the first year of World War I. The emblem on Rubinstein’s shoulder evokes the bloodshed of war, but the brilliant red may also signal the painter’s passion for the actress. Reproductions of this painting, together with the poem, were later sold to raise money for the Red Cross, and Brooks received the Cross of the Legion of Honor for her service to France.
